Bioidentical Hormones The 2001 Women’s Health Initiative (WHI) generated a flurry of interest in bioidentical hormone therapy. The study of 16,000
50- to 79-year-old women found significant increases in breast cancer, heart disease and stroke in those receiving the synthetic hormones Premarin and Provera. Synthetic hormones are produced in a laboratory. Bioidentical hormones are compounded by a pharmacist with special training and interest in creating hormones identical to those produced by our bodies. Centered on results of saliva hormone testing to determine areas of deficiency, bioidentical hormone therapy simply tries to correct deficiencies by supplementing patients with natural hormones. Some concern exists about the bioavailability of these compounds and the consistency of dosages, as no FDA regulations govern them. For patients interested in pursuing this option, we have extensive experience managing such therapies -- and the good fortune of having competent compounding pharmacies in our area.
