Loop Electrical Excision Procedure
Loop electrical excision procedure (LEEP) is recommended if we elect to remove the abnormal cells on the cervix. We can safely perform the procedure in the office. A fine wire loop with a special high-frequency electrical current allows precise removal of the abnormal tissue on the cervix. Because the wire is so thin, there is very little damage to surrounding tissue and excellent healing of the cervix. We send the removed tissue to a laboratory to confirm the diagnosis and to ensure that the abnormality was contained within the specimen. Patients report menstrual-like cramping following LEEP, and most resume normal activities within a day.
