Abnormal Pap Smear Evaluation
Pap smears screen patients for abnormalities on the cells of the cervix. A woman's cervix is the lowest part of the uterus, extending into the vagina. Cells in the cervix constantly change. If these changes become abnormal, dysplasia develops -- and may turn into cancer if left untreated. An abnormal result indicates the need for further evaluation. Precancerous changes occur due to exposure to particular strains of human papilloma virus (HPV) through sexual contact. Evaluation includes special DNA testing to determine whether there has been exposure to HPV. If positive, the cervix will be examined under magnification in an office procedure called colposcopy. Often, mild abnormalities require no treatment. Should we detect a more severe abnormality, we generally recommend removal of the outer layer of cells.
