Pelvic Support Problems
Pelvic organs can change as a woman ages, especially if she has experienced pregnancy and childbirth during her lifetime. Women describe feeling pelvic pressure or "heaviness"; many experience the sensation of "something falling out of my vagina." These symptoms may be caused by pelvic support problems. When the tissues that support the pelvic organs are stretched and damaged, the organ that they support may drop down and press against the wall of the vagina. This causes a bulge. Sometimes the organ will drop down so much that the bulge protrudes through the vaginal opening. Symptoms tend to worsen after prolonged standing, repeated coughing, lifting or straining. The bladder, uterus and rectum are the most common organs involved in pelvic organ prolapse. Rarely is prolapse dangerous, but it can significantly disrupt quality of life if left untreated. By careful evaluation of your symptoms and a detailed physical exam, we can make a diagnosis and implement therapy to alleviate symptoms. Treatment often includes lifestyle modification, pelvic strengthening with physical therapy, reduction of prolapsed tissue with a pessary or surgery to correct prolapse defects.
