Premenstrual Syndrome
Premenstrual syndrome (PMS) is a woman's body’s heightened response to fluctuations of hormones that occur during the menstrual cycle. The symptoms can be as varied as the patients who experience them: mood disorders, anxiety, agitation, increased appetite, food cravings, breast tenderness, headache, fatigue and swelling of hands and feet, to name a few. The exact origin of PMS is unknown, but several therapies have been extremely effective in helping to alleviate symptoms. Frequently, we ask a patient to keep a symptom calendar and to undergo hormone testing at a certain time during her cycle to best tailor a treatment plan. In addition, exercise, dietary modification and nutritional supplementation prove remarkably helpful.
