Saliva Hormone Testing
Hormones produced in our bodies travel in the bloodstream tied to carrier proteins. When bound, these hormones are not active or able to exert their intended effect. As bound hormones reach their target tissues, they break free from their carrier proteins, diffuse into cells, and take effect. Saliva is a useful “target tissue” for measuring unbound, biologically active hormone. We want to measure how much hormone is getting into tissues, not just how much is present in the bloodstream. Other advantages to saliva testing include painless, noninvasive collection and ease of timing specimen collection to menstrual cycles. Kits are sent home with patients, eliminating the need to coordinate the collection of saliva with laboratory or office availability. Most insurance plans cover saliva hormone testing.
