Traditional Hormone Therapy Hormone therapy can relieve the symptoms of low estrogen levels that result from natural or surgical menopause. Data collected by the Women’s Health Initiative (WHI) in 2001 significantly changed the face of hormone therapy. Concerns regarding increased risk of breast cancer, stroke and heart disease in women that use hormones over many years encouraged us to rethink synthetic hormone treatments. At this time, the American College of Obstetrics and Gynecology (ACOG) recommends hormone therapy only for the treatment of menopausal symptoms -- hot flashes, night sweats, and vaginal dryness. ACOG advises the lowest effective doses for the shortest amount of time to alleviate symptoms. Even though protection from osteoporosis and colon cancer are known long-term benefits, ACOG urges the discontinuance of hormone treatment once symptoms of menopause subside.
