Estrogen treatment comes in a variety of delivery systems including pills, patches, creams and vaginal preparations. In women with a uterus, progesterone also needs to be given to protect the uterus from developing cancer. Most pharmaceutical companies that manufacture hormones produce estrogen and a synthetic version of progesterone called progestin. Many believe the synthetic progestin contributes to much of the concern about and risk of hormone treatment.
