Urinary Incontinence
Over 13 million women in the United States experience urinary incontinence or loss of bladder control at some point in their lives. We challenge our patients to not necessarily accept this condition as a “normal” consequence of aging. Incontinence affects women of all ages, for a variety of different reasons. Though not life-threatening, incontinence problems impact daily activities, raising again quality-of-life issues.
The four types of urinary incontinence most common in women:
Stress incontinence involves the unintentional loss of urine with laughing, coughing, sneezing or exercising.
Urge incontinence involves the sudden, intense urge to urinate, followed by a loss of urine. Patients describe not getting to the bathroom in time, getting up at night to void or always on the lookout for a bathroom when in public.
Mixed incontinence occurs when women have symptoms of both stress and urge incontinence.
