Surgical Therapy
Over the past ten years, the treatment of stress incontinence has been revolutionized. These minimally invasive, outpatient surgical procedures have proven tremendously successful. Normally, the urethra is supported by the pelvic floor muscle to maintain a tight seal and prevent involuntary urine loss. In women with stress incontinence, the weakened tissues cannot support the urethra in its normal position. By inserting a ribbon-like strip of mesh under the urethra to provide support whenever you stress this area (cough or sneeze), the urethra remains closed, and prevents involuntary urine loss. This procedure can be performed alone or in conjunction with other procedures. Because only small incisions are needed, there is very little recovery required if performed alone.
